Bursting into the world of music comes a young beauty that can do it all. Singer, songwriter, and dancer describes just a few of her many talents. She goes by Lady V in the music world, but her birth name is Vanitra (Ve -knee- tra), in which she is a native of Montgomery, Alabama. She grew up very quiet and reserved, therefore only singing in her own privacy. Not knowing her parents were listening, she sang Whitney Houston's "The Greatest Love of All". Her parents were blown away and enrolled her in music lessons. She later began singing in churches, recitals, school plays, and talent shows at the age of 5 years old. By the age of 9 she was singing all over Montgomery, including weddings. Her parents could see early on that Vanitra was musically talented, so the only natural thing was to put her in an Arts Magnet School. She later began playing the piano, and her first piece performed was a major selection written by Beethoven. Anything musical came natural to her. Anything including poetry; this would have great significance to Vanitra's career without her even realizing it. Shortly after Vanitra went on to win multiple poetry contests and talent shows. Realizing at a very young age that poetry was just song lyrics, she began to put music to her lyrics at the age of 12, but only expressed her music and lyrics to herself. During her free time from school she would work around the recording studio to earn studio time. This soon led to her first demo, a remake of Terry Ellis Wherever You Are.
She later sang for an up and coming local producer named Kevin "Khao" Cates who at the time was shopping for a production deal. He agreed to let Vanitra sing on the demonstration version that is sent to artists looking for producers and songwriters. The song was rehearsed but never recorded. Frustrated and disappointed, Vanitra decided to have a backup to music and attended Alabama A&M University. During her time spent in college she met another producer who had status in the Music Industry. He produced for a boy group called New Kids on the Block and a few other known artists. The demo was played for him, and he agreed to work with Vanitra. He agreed to do a whole album. One song was completed which got airplay in Detroit, Michigan, and Montgomery, Al. Afterwards the producer was never seen again by Vanitra or her family. Vanitra had thoughts of giving up on music and never looking back, but her love for music would not let her quit. While attending Alabama A&M University she became one of the lead singers for a band that gave her further exposure in Huntsville, Al. She began to express her songwriting and music to others. Getting a great reception from other artists she began writing and arranging music for other artists.
Attending an Arts Magnet School, she knew of many artists and producers who shared her goals. Bao Pham a.k.a. Classic was a student of Vanitra's mother and attended school with Vanitra until the age of 12. Officially meeting at the age of 7, ironically years later they meet again. Bao Pham is a talented producer/artist who caught Vanitra's attention when she listened to his album recorded at his house. She could hear the talent and genius come through his music. Vanitra contacted Bao and they have since recorded 5 songs. Vanitra later decided to test one of her songs with the public by entering it into a contest called "The Battle of the Beats" in Montgomery, Al on 97.9 Jamz, in which local artists compete. The public received it so well that the radio station decided to add the song to daily rotation. The buzz that Vanitra was creating for herself, led Kevin "Khao" Cates back into her life, who is now the head of the production team for Grand Hustle. He was so impressed with Vanitra's rare musical abilities that he approached her with singing and songwriting opportunities. These include songwriting with Intaprize Production Inc. (Khao's label) which gave Vanitra an opportunity to collaborate with Lyndrea (sister of Venus and Serena Williams), Big Kuntry from P$C, and Ashley who is the newest addition to the Lil Romeo show on Nickelodeon. Vanitra is a strong young lady who does not except failure. It doesn't' take a rocket scientist to figure that she will be the next big superstar. She has gone through struggles, ups and downs, but through it all she continues to keep God first. She has waited for her time and her time is slowly but surely approaching. Vanitra is working on the entire album with multiple producers and her own songwriting. After the album is complete she will began shopping for a record deal and songwriting opportunities. Vanitra believes that "no task is too hard" and that she will be an example for all the artists who had it hard breaking into the forever changing and complex music industry.
She continues to be motivated by Kane West and other artists who had to struggle to get the success that was rightfully theirs. There are four things that she says she will never give up on, love, life, happiness, and music!
